Team GP VeloTek helps Tour of Lawrence by volunteering at the Street Sprints and by racing in mass over the weekend. Even polar bear and coach Jim Whittaker was seen at the summer races.
Back for the 3rd year the Tour of Lawrence offered great racing and great atmosphere for the three days of racing in and around the University of Kansas campus and downtown Lawrence. I’m sure the Lawrence chamber of commerce was excited as we were as increased crowds greeted the racers in this 3rd edition. Weather was typical Kansas in July but Sunday was cooler and the rain storms really impacted the race.
Friday Downtown Street Sprints- Grant Harrison and Mike Rost mixed it up with the big boys.
Saturday KU Campus Circuit Race
Cat 4/5 – 3rd Mike Rost
Cat 5 – 3rd Keith Guilford, 5th Ben Alexander
Cat 4 – 2nd Mike Garven
Sunday Downtown Lawrence Criterium
Cat 4/5 – 1st Rei Manneck, 3rd Mike Rost, 5th Matt Childs
Cat 5 – Keith Guilford
Kurt Muehlbach volunteered Friday night and then raced around the top 10 on Saturday and Sunday. Kurt upgraded to category 3 cyclist this season and continues to improve his performances and his consistency. He’s looking forward to racing Hotter than Hell in August.
Lindsay Lorenz in her second year of racing had this to say about the race. The campus circuit race was crazy hot and the 3/4 field was very fast. I improved over last year but it was still challenging. Sunday’s heavy rains was a little scary but the cool temps were a relief. It was my first rain criterium race and I feel more confident about cornering in the rain now.
It was great to see Team GP VeloTek alumni Joseph Schmalz (Elbowz Racing) win the Men’s Pro1/2 race in a blistering last lap attack up the hill. Joseph’s really excelled in cycling and more about than and others in the Team GP alumni section this fall.
